Two different Phinehases?
In Numbers 25:11 it says that Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest, turned God’s anger away because in verse 7 it says that Phinehas thrust a spear into the Israelite’s stomach and into the Medianite woman. They were doing evil things.
Is this the SAME Phinehas in 1 Samuel? Eli’s son? He had two sons, Phinehas and Hophni. I don’t understand because it was over 300 years earlier that Phinehas killed those two people. And, is this the same Eleazar that conversed with Moses in the desert? Again, I’m confused who Eleazar is. I thought his name was changed to Eli?
Thanks for writing.
No, these would not be the same individual. Phinehas and Eleazar were popular names in their day much as John and Mike are popular names in our day. So while they had the same name, they were different individuals.
