"Jesus Calls Us"
Date written: April 22nd, 2004
Scripture ref: Mark 1:16-20
SUBJECT: Worldliness, Discipleship
TITLE: "Jesus Calls Us"
PROPOSITION: Jesus calls us 1) to salvation 2) to holiness, 3) to worship, 4) to heaven.
Objectives: That each would understand that to which Jesus calls us and that we would follow.
Aim: To encourage everyone to prioritize their life based upon the call of Jesus.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read: Mark 1:16-20
2. About the Text:
1) We find in these verses the call of several of Jesus' apostles.
2) Without hesitation, each of them get up, leave their things and follow Jesus.
3) Since when is this rational behavior?
4) How many of us would simply leave our occupations and families and follow someone simply because he said "Follow me"?
5) It would be irrational behavior to act in such a way for a mere man.
6) But we're not talking about someone who is a mere man.
3. "Jesus Calls Us"
1) We have a song in our book, #344, with this title.
2) This song is a thinking song.
3) It sets before us the sinful world in which we live and then tells us that Jesus calls us out of that to a higher and greater plane.
4) What will we do with Jesus call?

DISCUSSION: Jesus calls us . . .
I. To Salvation
1. In Matthew 11:28-30 he makes this call. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
2. He calls those who are burdened with the yoke of sin. Mark 2:17 "When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
3. He calls us to leave worldly habits, worldly friends, and worldly desires.
1) Matthew 16:24-26 "Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?"
2) Luke 14:25-33 "Now there went with him great multitudes: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man cometh unto me, and hateth not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Whosoever doth not bear his own cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doth not first sit down and count the cost, whether he have wherewith to complete it? Lest haply, when he hath laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all that behold begin to mock him, saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and asketh conditions of peace. So therefore whosoever he be of you that renounceth not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple."
4. He calls us to salvation through faith and obedience in Him and His word. Notice John 3:36 in the ASV "He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him."
5. We've been called to salvation. Will we make it a priority?
II. To Holiness
1. He tells us in Matthew 5:48 "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
2. He gives us his word so that we may be made holy/sanctified. John 17:17 "Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth."
3. He expects us not to turn back. Luke 9:57-62 "And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."
4. He expects us to keep his commandments. John 15:10 "If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love."
5. We've been called to holiness. Will we make it a priority?
III. To Worship
1. Jesus tells us to leave behind the righteousness of men and exceed it with the righteousness of God. Matthew 5:20 "For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven."
2. He calls us to leave behind the vain worship created by men. Mark 7:7-13 "Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye."
3. Jesus expects us to put His kingdom and His righteousness first. Matthew 6:33
4. He expects us to worship God in spirit and in truth. John 4:24
5. We've been called to worship. Will we make it a priority?
IV. To Heaven
1. He tells us this is where we ought to lay up our treasure. Matthew 5:19-21 "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also."
2. He tells us it is the one who does the Father's will who will be there. Matthew 7:21 "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven."
3. And He told us he went to prepare a place for his disciples that we could be there too. John 14:1-3 "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
4. We've been called to heaven. Will we make it a priority?
CONCLUSION:
1. Jesus calls us . . .
1) Away from sin and to salvation
2) Away from impurity and to holiness.
3) Away from vain worship and to true worship.
4) Away from this life and to heaven.
2. Jesus calls us. Will we make His call our priority? How will we answer His call?
