Scripture ref: 1 Tim. 2:1, 2

SUBJECT: Mothers' Day

TITLE: A Mothers' Day Prayer

PROPOSITION: My prayer for Mothers' Day is that 1) mothers love their children, 2) husbands honor their wives as mothers, 3) children obey their mothers, and 4) mothers put God first in their lives.

OBJECTIVE: Each person should have a renewed sense of respect for the institution of motherhood.

Aim: To encourage mothers to be what God wants them to be.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: 1 Tim. 2:1, 2

2. About the Text:

1) Paul tells us to pray for all men.

2) Particularly for kings and those in authority.

3) While the passage is discussing government officials it brings to our mind others as well.

4) We particularly are thinking today regarding the institution of motherhood.

5) Mothers need our prayers.

6) Romans 13:7 "Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour."

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: My prayer for Mothers' Day is that …

I.   Mothers love their children.

1. We hear in the news of mothers that have failed in this area.

1) Murder

2) Abandonment.

3) Abortion

2. Titus 2:4 "That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,"

3. Romans 1:31 "without natural affection."

4. Being a mother often is difficult.

5. We need to encourage mothers to love their children.

II.  Husbands honor their wives as mothers.

1. The failures that we have discussed regarding some mothers can also be attributed to men who fail to love and honor their women as mothers.

2. It is sinful for men to demand sex from women prior to marriage – abortion.

3. Men should provide emotional and physical support for their wives.

4. 1 Peter 3:7 "Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered."

5. Many women are pressured into taking the role of the husband because of the failure of the husband to lead in the marriage. This is not God's way.

III. Children obey their mothers.

1. This is due to the erosion of respect for women in society and the family.

1) When mothers abort babies, what are we telling our children?

2) Why should they respect their mothers?

3) When husbands do not respect their wives as mothers, what do the children see?

4) We may teach our children to obey mother by word, but what are we saying by example?

2. Ephesians 6:1-3 "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth."

3. Romans 1:30 "Disobedient to parents."

IV.  Mothers put God first in their lives.

1. Here is the solution to all the problems discussed this morning.

2. When mothers put God first in their lives, then they will…

1) Love their children.

2) Command the respect of their husbands.

3) Command the respect of their children.

3. Matthew 6:33

CONCLUSION:

1. My prayer for mothers on this Mothers' Day is that…

1) Mothers love their children.

2) Husbands respect their wives as mothers.

3) Children obey their mothers.

4) Mothers put God first in their lives.

2. Prayer for mothers.

3. Invitation

1) Have you been respecting God's creation of mother in your life?

2) If you are not a Christian this morning . . .

a. Hear the word; Romans 10:17 “Faith comes by hearing . . .”

b. Believe with all your heart; Hebrews 11:6 “For without faith it is impossible . . . .”

c. Repent of your sins ( Acts 17:30).

d. Confess Jesus as the Son of God ( Matt. 16:16).

e. Be Baptized for the remission of your sins ( Mark 16:15,16).
