SUBJECT: Resurrection

TITLE: Implications of the Resurrection

PROPOSITION: The resurrection of Jesus from the dead implies: 1) the identity of the One resurrected; 2) the injunction of baptism; 3) the insurance of a second resurrection; 4) the inspection of all mankind in the Day of Judgment.

OBJECTIVES: The hearer should be able to understand the significance of the resurrection of Jesus upon the truth that Jesus is the Son of God and His words, therefore, are truth and that he is, therefore, the Christ.

AIM: I hope to impress upon each person the significance of the resurrection of Jesus.

INTRODUCTION:

Read: 1 Corinthians 15:12-19 "Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable."

1. About the Text:

1) Some in Corinth were saying that there is no resurrection of the dead.

2) Paul is writing to counter this teaching and to show some of the implications of the teaching.

3) He says that if there is no resurrection, then . . .

a. Preaching is vain.

b. Faith is vain

c. Ye are yet in your sins.

d. The dead are gone forever.

e. We are most miserable people.

4) Last week in Bible class we studied and proved beyond reasonable doubt, the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

5) What are the implications of these momentous event in history?

DISCUSSION: The resurrection of Jesus from the dead implies . . .

I.   The Identity of Jesus -- He is the Son of God.

1. As sure as Jesus has been risen from the dead, you can be sure that He is the Son of God. Romans 1:4 " And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead."

2. The prophets prophesied in this regard.

1) Psalm 2:7 "I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee."

2) John the baptizer as well was a prophet. He said, "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God."

3. He said himself that he was the Son of God.

1) John 9:25 "Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him."

2) Matthew 16:15-17 "He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven."

4. The Apostles said he was the Son of God.

1) John -- John 20:30,31 "Many other signs, therefore, . . . ."

2) Peter -- Acts 3:26 "Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities."

3) Paul -- Acts 9:20 "And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God."

II.  The Injunction of baptism -- Baptism is necessary for salvation.

1. As sure as Jesus was risen from the dead, you can be sure that baptism is necessary for salvation.

2. After his resurrection and before his ascension Jesus gave the apostles the great commission. He did so upon the authority of His resurrection.

1) Matthew 28:18-20 says, "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."

2) Mark 16:15, 16 say, "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned."

3. Paul states in Romans 6:1-10 that baptism is in the likeness of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

1) "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord."

2) We are made alive in God through the resurrection of Jesus.

3) Where is that resurrection manifested today? Through baptism.

4. Paul writes in Colossians 2:12 that Baptism is our statement of faith that we believe Jesus was raised from the dead.

1) "Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead."

2) Literally, "Buried with him in baptism in whom also ye are raised with (him) through the belief of the working of God of the resurrecting Him out of death."

3) Just as he was alive after resurrection, so also we are alive (spiritually) after baptism.

4) This means that before baptism we are spiritually "dead."

5. Peter writes in 1 Peter 3:21 that the power of the resurrection to save is in baptism: "The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ"

III. The Insurance of our own resurrection -- Because he was risen, we can be sure that we will be risen as well.

1. Jesus said upon the occasion of Lazarus resurrection in John 11:24-26 "Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"

2. Peter writes in 1 Peter 1:3 that our hope for resurrection is based upon His resurrection: " Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead"

3. Paul writes numerous times concerning the relationship of Jesus resurrection to our resurrection.

1) 1 Corinthians 15:20, 21 "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead."

2) 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 " But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words."

IV.  The Inspection of all mankind in the final judgment day -- God will judge all mankind

1. Jesus said in John 5:28, 29 "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation."

2. Paul told the Athenians in Acts 17:30, 31 "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead"

3. 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."

CONCLUSION:

1. Let us also preach the resurrection of Jesus Christ and its implications.

1) The Identity of Jesus--That He is the Son of God.

2) The Injunction of Baptism--that it is necessary for salvation.

3) The Insurance of the faithful--that those who die in Christ will be resurrected from the dead.

4) The Inspection of all mankind--there will be a final judgment day!

2. Invitation

1) If you are a Christian but have fallen away

a. The message of the resurrection for you is to remember the surety of these things.

b. If you are not living like you should, then you really don't believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead.

c. But if you do believe he was resurrected, then live that way!

2) If you are not a Christian this morning . . .

a. Remember the words of Paul in Acts 17:30, 31 "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead"

b. Heed the plan that it has for man’s salvation today!

a) Hear the word; Romans 10:17 “Faith comes by hearing . . .”

b) Believe with all your heart; Hebrews 11:6 “For without faith it is impossible . . . .”

c) Repent of your sins ( Acts 17:30).

d) Confess Jesus as the Son of God (Matt.16:16).

e) Be baptized for the remission of your sins ( Mark 16:15,16).
