Brotherly Love Enjoined
Introduction:
1. We have an opportunity to remind ourselves about the love we are to show.
2. We show that love in many different ways.
3. For some it is through service and others through words of affection.
4. It can be as simple as a touch or a gift.
5. But the love we have for God should be shown in two specific ways; by obedience and toward the brethren.
6. 1 Peter 1:22 shows us that because we have been morally reformed to possess a pure heart then we must act out that pure heart by loving our brethren.
7. One may simply ask what the result of our obedience to the truth is and the answer will be unfeigned love of the brethren.
8. The extent of that brotherly love is measured by a simple word - unfeigned.
9. It means not hypocritical.
10. Our love for one another cannot be hypocritical and requires that we prove our brotherly love because we have a pure heart.
- Brotherly Love requires a pure heart acting in a fervent manner.
- Acting with a heart that is drawn out.
1. Fervent implies that we intend to draw out our hearts to share with the brethren.
2. We can share our emotions knowing of the purity that we possess of the heart.
- Remembering our common parenthood.
1. Begotten together because we obeyed our Father in Heaven.
2. Willing to overlook personality conflicts or problems areas
- Begotten by the word not by man.
1. We all stand on equal footing because we are saved the same way.
2. We are love one another because we think the same way.
- Brotherly Love requires a determination of service to one another.
- There must be a desire to restore one fallen.
1. Love requires that we be willing to use discipline when called for.
2. That disciple is intended not to punish but to restore
- There must be sharing for in the end we are alone.
1. In order to help ourselves we must share ourselves with one another.
2. It is difficult if we are not striving for a pure heart.
- There must be a desire to be helped.
1. We have to want to go to heaven.
2. Do we want to rule the brotherhood or help it?
- Brotherly Love requires that we prefer one another.
- Choosing one another over worldly friends.
1. It is not easy to make friends but we have so many to choose from.
2. We can provide one another with so much more than worldly friends can.
- Looking for a necessity in order to fill it.
1. Why would we not want to help one another when we know that we will be persecuted?
2. I must be actively looking to help my fellow brothers and sisters.
- Overcoming evil with good.
1. God hates sowers of discord among the brethren.
2. Vengeance belongs to God.
