Let Us Not Be Moved!
Date written: September 6th, 2003
Scripture ref: Colossians 1:23
SUBJECT: Steadfastness
TITLE: Let us Not Be Moved
PROPOSITION:In this lesson we will look at the necessity for us not to be moved away from the hope of the gospel. We should not be moved because 1) God is immovable, 2) The Lord, Jesus, is immovable, 3) The gospel is immovable, 4) The kingdom is immovable, and 5) The souls of men depend upon our being immovable.
OBJECTIVES:Each Christian should be able to demonstrate from the scriptures the need to be immovable in the faith.
AIM:I want to exhort everyone present to hold fast to the gospel that they received.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read: Col. 1:23 "If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;"
2. About the Text:
1) Paul is writing the epistle to the Colossians to combat the false teaching of Gnosticism.
2) This teaching denied the humanity of Christ.
3) As a result, the gospel was being changed to fit this false doctrine.
4) Paul exhorts the Christians . . .
a. To continue in the faith.
b. To be grounded and settled.
c. To not be moved away from the hope of the gospel.
3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.
DISCUSSION: Let us not be moved . . .
I. Because we have an immovable God.
1. Malachi 3:6 "For I am the LORD, I change not…."
2. Numbers 23:19 "God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?"
3. Psalm 102:25 "Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end."
II. Because we have an immovable Lord.
1. Hebrews 13:8, 9a "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines."
2. Revelation 1:8 "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."
3. Hebrews 7:24, 25 "But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them."
III. Because we have an immovable Gospel.
1. Galatians 1:6-9 "I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed."
2. 2 Corinthians 1:19, 20 "For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us."
3. Matthew 24:35 "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."
IV. Because we have an immovable kingdom.
1. Daniel 2:44 says, "And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever."
2. Luke 1:33 "And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end."
3. Hebrews 12:27 "Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:"
V. Because the souls of men depend upon us being immovable.
1. Hebrews 3:5, 6 "And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end."
2. Col. 2:6 ,7 "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving."
3. 1 Corinthians 15:58 "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."
CONCLUSION:
1. Let us not be moved because . . .
1) We have an immovable God.
2) We have an immovable Lord.
3) We have an immovable gospel.
4) We have an immovable kingdom.
5) The souls of men depend upon US being immovable.
